Ganes Creek, AK – A Gold Hunter’s Paradise

Our gold hunting trip this summer was to Ganes Creek, Alaska. The mine is owned & operated by the Doug Clark family and the Dan Wiltz family. Over 250,000 ounces of gold has been mined with the largest being 122 ounces.

the gold from black sand concentrates.

Ganes Creek is 45 miles west of McGrath, which is 221 miles northwest of Anchorage. As we flew in and landed on the 5000-foot runway, we could see miles & miles of cobbles & tailings left by the old dredge. Ganes Creek is the opportunity of a lifetime to find large nuggets. This trip should be a priority for anyone interested in metal detecting and having the opportunity to get a large nugget. I found the first nugget within our group which weighed out at .39 ounces.

The nugget Steve found – a .39 ounce beauty!

Paul Kunkel found this 1 oz.+ nugget on his last day.
Keith Magnson consistently found nuggets. This is one that he showed me after one of his daily outings.

Dave used to live in Anchorage with his wife but got a bad case of gold fever. Notice the gold in his pan. Terry Howard - known in camp as one of the Reno boys found numerous nuggets with two different detectors.

Balizar Martinez - "Val", known as one of the Reno boys,
found several large nuggets and taught Terry how
to metal detect. Both were very successful!
